Upbit Adds Newton Protocol (NEWT) Trading Pairs
South Korea’s Upbit, one of the country’s biggest crypto exchanges, is rolling out support for Newton Protocol (NEWT). Starting soon, traders can buy and sell NEWT using Korean won, Bitcoin, or Tether (USDT). But there’s a catch—transfers only work on the Ethereum network. If you try sending NEWT from another blockchain, don’t expect it to go smoothly. Refunds might take ages, if they happen at all.
Deposits made before NEWT gets a listed price on sites like CoinMarketCap will face extra checks, especially if they’re over 1 million KRW (about $750). It’s part of Upbit’s compliance with the “Travel Rule,” which basically means they need to know where large sums are coming from.
Trading Rules and Early Restrictions
Upbit’s announcement included a few quirks about how trading will work at launch. For the first five minutes, you won’t be able to place buy orders—only sells. There’ll also be a minimum price floor to prevent wild swings.
And for the first two hours? No market orders. Just limit orders, meaning you’ll have to set your price in advance. It’s a way to keep things stable, though some traders might find it frustrating.
What’s Newton Protocol Anyway?
Newton Protocol is one of those Web3 projects trying to make AI and blockchain work together. Their big idea? AI “agents” that can carry out tasks securely, like automating transactions or managing assets based on user commands.
The NEWT token plays a few roles in this system: staking (locking up tokens for rewards), paying for services, and voting on governance decisions. Whether it’ll catch on is another question—these kinds of projects often sound great on paper but take time to prove useful.
Security Warnings and Fine Print
Upbit’s being cautious. Only deposits from verified wallets will go through, and if you send NEWT from an unsupported address, you might not get it back without jumping through hoops. Big transfers could trigger requests for proof of funds, too.
They’ve also shared the official Ethereum contract address (0xD0eC028a3D21533Fdd200838F39c85B03679285D) to help avoid scams. Always double-check—fake tokens pop up all the time.
This move keeps Upbit ahead of the curve in listing newer Web3 projects, though whether NEWT gains traction remains to be seen. And, of course, none of this is investment advice. Crypto’s volatile enough without taking random news articles as gospel.
