The Sandbox Launches Largest LAND Auction with GBM

The Sandbox Rolls Out Its Biggest LAND Auction Yet

This week, The Sandbox is trying something new—and it’s a big one. They’ve teamed up with GBM Auctions to launch their largest LAND sale so far, offering 110 parcels of virtual land alongside 220 avatars tied to 22 different brands. What’s interesting here isn’t just the scale, but the approach. For the first time, they’re running an auction *before* opening a public sale on their own platform. It’s a shift in how they’re handling these digital plots, and it could set a precedent.

The breakdown? There are 80 standard LAND parcels, 26 labeled as “premium,” and 4 larger estates. Those estates—three 3×3 plots and one 6×6—are exclusive to this auction. You won’t find them listed directly on The Sandbox’s marketplace, at least not yet.

How the Auction Works (and Why It’s Different)

GBM’s running the show with what they call a “Win-Win” auction model. The idea is that even if you get outbid, you don’t walk away empty-handed. Your bid gets refunded, plus a small reward for participating. It’s a way to keep things fair and avoid the frenzy of last-minute bidding wars that usually drive prices up unpredictably. There’s also an onchain element here, which means prices are tracked transparently—no guessing games.

The auction kicked off on July 15 and wraps up on the 22nd. Everything up for grabs is part of a primary sale, so don’t expect to snag these on OpenSea or other secondary markets during the event.

Why This Collaboration Matters

The Sandbox and GBM held a live chat on X (formerly Twitter) earlier this week to walk through the details. It’s worth noting that GBM isn’t just another auction platform—they’re focused on Web3-native sales, and this partnership underscores their role in shaping how digital assets get distributed. Decentralized auctions might not sound thrilling to everyone, but for collectors and metaverse investors, it’s a step toward more structured, less chaotic sales.

Still, it’s hard to say whether this will become the norm. The Sandbox has experimented with different sale formats before, and this feels like another test. If it works, though, we might see more big names adopting similar models.
