Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao’s Major Contribution
Binance co-founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao made headlines by donating 1,000 BNB tokens, valued at approximately $600,000, to support relief operations in the quake-hit regions. The earthquake, which occurred on March 28, caused severe destruction, leading to 2,719 deaths in Myanmar and 18 in Thailand, with dozens more still missing.
Zhao initially pledged 500 BNB tokens to aid the disaster relief efforts but doubled his commitment due to the urgent needs and extensive damage caused by the disaster. Zhao’s contribution underscores the growing acceptance and utility of cryptocurrencies in humanitarian efforts, especially in areas with compromised financial infrastructure.
Advantages of Crypto Donations in Emergencies
Anndy Lian, a blockchain expert and author, highlighted the advantages of crypto donations during emergencies. According to Lian, crypto transactions provide immediate and direct relief, bypassing traditional banking delays, which can be life-saving in crisis situations.
“Cryptocurrencies facilitate rapid aid distribution, reaching affected people directly through digital wallets without reliance on banks or wire transfers,” explained Lian.
Crypto Donations Predicted to Surge Further
The Giving Block, a prominent crypto-focused charity platform, also launched a campaign aiming to raise $500,000 specifically for Myanmar and Thailand’s earthquake relief. The platform predicts crypto donations will further surge, potentially hitting $2.5 billion in 2025, driven by rising crypto valuations and more favorable regulatory conditions.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, known for his charitable contributions, previously donated $180,000 in Ether to biotechnology charity Kanro, demonstrating continued high-profile support for cryptocurrency philanthropy.
