In a significant move towards sustainability, Bitcoin mining is projected to be powered by over 70% renewable energy sources by 2030, according to a new report by the MiCA Crypto Alliance and analytics firm Nodiens. This shift highlights the industry’s active transition from fossil fuels to cleaner, renewable alternatives such as wind, solar, hydro, and energy-from-waste solutions.
By the end of 2024, renewable energy accounted for 41% of Bitcoin mining power, marking a substantial rise from just 20% in 2011. Solar and wind power have become increasingly prominent, making up approximately 6% and nearly 11% of total energy consumption, respectively.
Decline of Coal, Rise of Renewables
Coal usage in Bitcoin mining has seen a remarkable decline, dropping from 63% in 2011 to just 20% in 2024. This dramatic reduction underscores miners’ preference for sustainable energy sources and the growing economic incentives driving the adoption of renewables.
Mining’s Positive Impact on Climate Goals
Bitcoin climate analyst Daniel Batten emphasized that recent research strongly supports mining’s beneficial role in global climate efforts. Of 18 peer-reviewed studies conducted since 2023, 16 concluded that Bitcoin mining positively contributes to global clean energy objectives and helps stabilize electricity grids.
Countries and Companies Leading the Green Charge
Companies like BTC Digital are pioneering the integration of green energy into their operations. Simultaneously, countries such as Ethiopia and Bhutan are capitalizing on their renewable energy resources. In 2024 alone, Ethiopia generated around $1 billion from Bitcoin mining, harnessing surplus electricity from its Grand Renaissance Dam hydropower project.
This proactive shift indicates a robust and promising sustainable future for Bitcoin mining globally, demonstrating how financial growth and environmental responsibility can successfully coexist.
