Hashrate is a measure of how much work is being spent trying to find the next block. It cannot be observed directly — no one can poll every machine on earth — so published figures are estimates derived from how quickly blocks are actually arriving relative to the current difficulty. Treat any precise hashrate number as an inference rather than a measurement.
